Bornova Municipality has initiated several international cooperation programs and local urban transformation projects. The municipality approved four global initiatives, including the EU-funded REWEAVE Project, which focuses on creating a circular textile system through waste collection and repair. Other international engagements include joining the Mayors for Peace network and participating in United Nations programs regarding disability employment rights. At the 95th Izmir International Fair, the municipality showcased its “Green, Digital, and Urban Transformation” vision. The exhibition featured a Digital Experience Room with 3D digital twin applications, hybrid smart poles for energy production, and a prototype for Turkey’s largest Urban Garden. The display also highlighted local landmarks like Abide-i Hürriyet Square and KKTC Park to demonstrate the district’s cultural and technological evolution. Sustainability efforts have expanded through urban agriculture, mobility, and education. Following the summer harvest, the municipality expanded its urban agriculture program to nine community gardens covering 50,000 square meters. This initiative supports 1,160 female producers who receive free plots, soil, and seedlings to foster social empowerment. Participants have recently begun planting winter vegetable seedlings in locations such as the Pınarbaşı and Altındağ community gardens and the Yakaköy solidarity field. To further environmental awareness, the municipality launched a sustainability education initiative in local schools. The program trains teachers on climate change, waste management, and resource conservation, including composting, rainwater harvesting, and water efficiency. Additionally, the municipality organized 24 events for European Mobility Week and launched a mobilization in the Işıkkent region to address illegal debris and industrial waste dumping through 24/7 surveillance and municipal service deployment. Recent developments include the implementation of large-scale clean energy projects, reaching a capacity of 1.2 MW. Solar installations on the central marketplace and cleaning services site now cover significant portions of their energy needs, while hybrid smart poles support park infrastructure.
