Tensions regarding national symbols and historical narratives have emerged in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Srebrenica, a controversy arose following reports that a secondary school threatened students with disciplinary action for wearing national football team jerseys. While school officials denied targeted punishment, claiming they were enforcing an ethical code regarding neatness and ethnic sensitivity, political figures and human rights advocates condemned the move. Vice President of Republika Srpska Ćamil Duraković suggested the incident was part of an effort to “negate state symbols,” while Murat Tahirović of the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide called the reported actions “unacceptable.” This friction extended to public assembly restrictions in Banja Luka. The Banja Luka Police Administration banned a peaceful gathering organized by Studentska lista titled ‘Youth as Participants in Social Trends.’ Authorities stated that operational checks suggested the assembly could lead to a breach of public order, citing risks of physical attacks from organized groups and football supporters due to conflicting views regarding the Srebrenica genocide. Despite attempts by organizers to relocate the event to Mladen Stojanović Park, the ban was maintained. Disputes have since escalated between student organizations over historical narratives and state sovereignty. The Student Parliament of the University of Sarajevo (SPUS) has issued a strong condemnation of conclusions adopted by student organizations in Republika Srpska, including the Union of Students of Republika Srpska and the Student Parliament of the University of East Sarajevo Sarajevo. SPUS expressed disappointment with Serbian student groups, citing a lack of unity following negative deep concern over statements regarding Republika Srpska. Conversely, the Student Parliament of claiming ‘Republika Srpska is not a genocidal entity’ and rejecting the University status of Sarajevo (SPUS) condemned the Republika Srpska groups for denying certain generals as war criminals. SPUS emphasized that such claims do not invalidate legally binding court rulings regarding the Srebrenica genocide and rejecting or the criminal responsibility of Ratko Mladić and Radovan Karadžić. SPUS also challenged the rhetoric that ‘Drina is a backbone, not a border,’ arguing it threatens the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
