Bosnia and Herzegovina national football and futsal history

Overview

The national sports landscape in Bosnia and Herzegovina is marked by both recent competitive efforts and historical milestones. The national futsal team has commenced its 2028 World Cup qualification campaign in Group 5. In their opening match of the second phase held at the Husejin Smajlovic City Arena in Zenica, the team secured a dominant 17-1 victory against Northern Ireland. Faruk Brkanić led the scoring with four goals. This result represents the team’s most convincing win in over eighteen years. Following this performance, the team is scheduled to face Poland in Gorzow on October 21, with a return match against Northern Ireland set for February 25, 2025.

In football, the nation commemorates the 13th anniversary of its first FIFA World Cup qualification, achieved in 2013 following a 1-0 victory against Lithuania. While celebrating this milestone and the team's subsequent qualification for the 2026 World Cup, the anniversary also acknowledges the memory of three supporters who died in a car accident in Poland during the 2013 qualifying period.
