Balkan students continue medal haul at 2026 Olympiads

Throughout mid-2026, Balkan students demonstrated significant academic excellence across various international science and skill competitions. In June, Bosnian students achieved success in London at the International Greenwich Olympiad, winning five medals in categories including energy and environmental science, and in the TeenEagle competition, where they earned 21 medals in English and mathematics. In July, the Bosnian physics team secured two bronze medals and three honorable mentions at the International Physics Olympiad in Colombia. Montenegro also saw success in Colombia, with Jovan Janković earning a bronze medal at the International Physics Olympiad. Croatia contributed to the region's medal count with three bronze medals at the International Biology Olympiad in Vilnius and two bronze medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Tashkent. Bulgaria maintained a strong presence across multiple disciplines. At the International Chemistry Olympiad in Tashkent, the team won a gold, a silver, and two bronzes. In the International Economics Olympiad in Shenzhen, Bulgarian students earned two silvers and two bronzes, finishing 13th overall. In August, the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Tashkent saw further regional success. Bulgaria secured one gold, one silver, and two bronzes; Andrey Stefanov became only the second Bulgarian to win gold at both the IMO and the IOI in the same year. Macedonia earned one silver and two bronzes, with Damjan Dakov securing silver and becoming the most successful Macedonian participant in the competition's history. Romania also performed well, earning one gold, one silver, and two bronzes, ~~while~~ with Rareș-Andrei Neculau winning gold and Mihai-Valeriu Voicu earning silver.
