The Boston Red Sox have experienced a series of roster changes due to player injuries. On August 13, the team placed reliever Garrett Whitlock on the 15-day injured list because of right elbow inflammation, recalling Greg Weissert from Triple-A Worcester to fill the spot. By August 15, additional injuries impacted the roster. Designated hitter Masataka Yoshida was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain sustained during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Simultaneously, reliever Justin Slaten was placed on the 15-day injured list for right elbow inflammation; Slaten indicated he had been pitching through discomfort for much of the season. On August 31, the injury list expanded to include first baseman Willson Contreras, who was placed on the 10-day injured list following a left hamstring strain sustained during a game against the New York Yankees. Contreras, who leads the team in home runs (26) and RBIs (79), exited the game in the seventh inning after experiencing tightness in an injury he has been managing for over a month. Interim manager Chad Tracy stated the decision was made to allow Contreras to “recover fully for the final stretch of the season.” To fill his vacancy, the Red Sox recalled Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester, with Gasper expected to take over duties at first base. On September 9, outfielder Eli White was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right foot ligament injury, leading to the recall of infielder Anthony Seigler from Triple-A Worcester.
