Botucatu City Council salary and expansion proposal

Overview

The Botucatu City Council in São Paulo has moved to implement significant structural and financial changes. Initially, the council proposed Resolution Project No. 6/2026 and Amendment to the Organic Law No. 4/2026, which aimed to expand the number of council members from 11 to 17 and increase monthly salaries by approximately 82%.

The salary for councilors was proposed to rise from R$ 5,813.97 to R$ 10,600, while the Council President’s salary would increase from R$ 7,399.60 to R$ 13,600. These measures, which include a 13th-month salary benefit, are intended to take effect during the 2029–2032 legislature.

The council subsequently approved the 82% salary increase in a vote of seven in favor and three against. The approval process was met with public opposition, as residents attended the session to protest the increased public expenditure using signs and clown noses.
