Boyle Heights restaurant vehicle collision

Overview

On July 7, a vehicle collision occurred at Los Cinco Puntos Mexican Deli in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Surveillance footage shows an SUV mounted the curb and entered the outdoor dining area, striking diners.

Cristina Vargas, an 81-year-old woman, was pinned beneath the vehicle and suffered injuries that necessitated bilateral leg amputations. Her daughter, Gabriela Vargas, sustained a head injury and a leg injury during the impact. While Gabriela and a male companion at the table have since recovered, Cristina Vargas has been undergoing a difficult recovery.

Investigators determined the driver was allegedly impaired at the time of the crash. The suspect has been arrested and faces multiple felony charges.
