Brand impersonation scams targeting Tesco
Overview
Tesco alerted the City of London police regarding fraudulent advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. Unlicensed online casinos have been using the supermarket’s branding and logos to promote scams, claiming to be the “official Tesco casino”.
This form of brand impersonation has also affected other major entities such as Barclays and Monzo, as well as various high-profile figures. The UK Gambling Commission and the Advertising Standards Authority are investigating the matter, with the Gambling Commission describing the exploitation of trusted brands to funnel users toward unlicensed products as a “particularly cynical” form of illegal activity.
