Brazil continues to modernize its hemotherapy sector through updated regulatory frameworks and infrastructure investments. Following new Ministry of Health guidelines effective October 1, 2026, donation eligibility has been expanded. Regional institutions like the Hospital Geral de Nova Iguaçu (HGNI) are already applying these criteria, which now include allowing regular donors over 70 and 70, adolescents aged 16 and 17 to participate. 17, and individuals who have undergone certain procedures such as tattoos or cosmetic fillers after a four-month waiting period. HGNI has issued urgent calls for O positive and O negative blood types to replenish stocks. Logistical advancements are also improving the distribution of critical supplies. The Ministry of Health and the Unified Health System (SUS), in partnership with the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) and various airlines, have successfully completed a second transport of rare blood via commercial flight cabins. This initiative, which mirrors the logistics model used for organ transplants, allows for greater agility by transporting blood in passenger cabins rather than as standard cargo. This method enables faster medical responses during nights, weekends, and holidays, as demonstrated by a A recent successful transport of involved blood from collected in Ceará and flown to Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, for to treat a patient in critical condition following a kidney transplant. The patient required a specific transfusion due to the presence of the anti-Jsb antibody, a rare marker identified through the National Rare Blood Registry (CNSR). This method enables faster medical responses during nights, weekends, and holidays. To support the national supply of human immunoglobulin, the Novo PAC program is funding a new research and development laboratory at Hemobrás, with construction scheduled for 2026 and 2027. Further investments include R$ 150 million for production line equipment in Goiana, Pernambuco, and R$ 116 million for cold chain equipment across 125 services.
