Brazil cold front brings winds, rain, frost spreads heavy rain and wind alerts

The cold front that first produced a freeze in Paraná has spread across Brazil’s southern states, extending the chill to Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. Forecasts warn of a rapid temperature drop to around 5 °C in parts of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, with frost alerts for those states plus Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. Strong wind gusts of up to 100 km/h are expected in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, accompanied by rain, hail and thunderstorms. Inland, a dry air mass will keep relative humidity at 12‑20 % across the Central‑West and parts of the Southeast, while daytime highs may reach 37 °C in Goiás and the Triângulo Mineiro, raising fire‑risk concerns for the Goiânia metropolitan area and degrading air quality. An “Arco de Tempestades” line will bring intense thunderstorms and winds up to 50 km/h to Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Acre and Amazonas, and saturated soils in Rio Grande do Sul increase flooding, landslide and fallen‑tree risks. New forecasts show the front reaching Brazil’s northeast coast from southern Bahia to Rio Grande do Norte, with the heaviest rain expected in Alagoas, Pernambuco and Paraíba. Urban‑flooding warnings have been issued for Recife and João Pessoa, and isolated landslides are possible on city slopes. Wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h are also forecast for Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Goiás, prompting alerts for tree falls and power outages. The system is expected to intensify from 4 to 7 August, with the most severe winds projected for Friday night across the Serra Gaúcha and the highlands of Santa Catarina. The latest outlook adds rain totals of up to 100 mm in the southern states and highlights a heightened flood risk along the Uruguay River basin.
