In early July 2026, Brazil’s CNH programme reached 1.5 million licences, introducing free licences for people with disabilities and the CNH Social subsidy for low-income drivers. Late July saw the Federal Revenue begin blocking licence services for drivers whose Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas (CPF) data did not match official records. By 7 August, Detran reinforced that discrepancies in name, birth date, or parentage could suspend services, though financial debt alone does not trigger suspension. Simultaneously, a new point-system took effect: drivers may accumulate up to 40 points in 12 months with no ‘gravíssimas’ infractions, 30 points with one, and 20 points with two or more. On 10 August, new regulations established licence validity periods based on age: ten years for drivers under 50, five years for those aged 50 to 69, and three years for those aged 70 or older. Under Provisional Measure 1.327/2025, an automatic renewal system was introduced for drivers enrolled in the National Positive Registry of Drivers (RNPC) who have had no infractions in the previous 12 months. This benefit is available only once after a driver reaches age 50. Drivers aged 70 and above, or those with suspected physical or mental disabilities, are excluded from automatic renewal and must undergo mandatory in-person medical examinations. By late August, further details clarified that for drivers aged 70 and older, the reduced three-year renewal cycle necessitates frequent assessments of physical and mental fitness, including vision and hearing. Examiners may deny renewal or grant shorter validity periods if medical conditions, such as cataracts or glaucoma, compromise safety. Additionally, following Federal Law No. 14,534/2023, the CPF serves as the primary identifier, meaning data inconsistencies can obstruct renewals, duplicate issuances, or category changes through Detran.
