In Brazil, recent data indicates a trend of declining food costs in most major cities. In August 2026, the cost of the basic food basket decreased in 25 of the 27 state capitals, driven by lower prices for commodities such as tomatoes, potatoes, and powdered coffee. While annual costs for the food basket rose in many locations, monthly trends showed relief for consumers. Specific commodity reports highlight significant price drops in the coffee sector. Retail coffee prices fell across all categories compared to the previous year, with the most substantial decrease seen in ‘Traditional/Extra-strong coffee’ at 21.22%. Government officials have expressed optimism regarding food security, stating that El Niño is not expected to drive up food prices in 2026. Although a reduction in beef production is projected for 2027 due to livestock cycles, authorities expect increased supplies of chicken, pork, and eggs to maintain domestic price stability. By late September 2026, efforts to support the agricultural sector through debt restructuring have reached R$ 3.6 billion under Provisional Measure (MP) 1.376/26. Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Farming Fernanda Machiaveli noted that operations are expected to accelerate, having processed approximately 28.7 thousand operations to date. This represents roughly 12% of the R$ 25.8 billion authorized for the program. The measure targets producers who suffered losses between 2019 and 2025 due to adverse climate events or market price drops. However, the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) reported that some producers continue to face bureaucratic hurdles and difficulties accessing these conditions at banks. Regarding climate risks, the National Water Agency (ANA) has activated preparation plans to manage water resources through 2027.
