India ~~hosts Panama, Brazil, and Uruguay~~ completes friendly series against Panama, Brazil, and|

India concluded its ~~high-profile~~ international football friendly series against Panama, Brazil, and Uruguay, finishing with a 6-1 defeat against Uruguay on October 6 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan ~~(Salt Lake Stadium)~~ in Kolkata. The match, which served as the final stop on Uruguay’s Asian tour, was briefly interrupted for 30 to 45 minutes due to a thunderstorm and lightning. Uruguay, coached by Diego Forlán, took an early lead through an 11th-minute penalty by Darwin Núñez. India managed a historic equalizer in the 22nd minute via Anirudh Thapa, who became only the second Indian to score against Uruguay in a senior international match. However, Uruguay regained control following the weather delay, securing goals from Maximiliano Araújo (two), Rodrigo Zalazar, Juan Manuel Sanabria, and Rodrigo Aguirre. As part of a breast cancer awareness campaign, Uruguayan players wore pink socks during the match. Reflecting on the series, which began with a 1-1 draw against Panama on September 26 and included a 4-0 loss to Brazil on October 3, the Indian national team, known as the Blue Tigers, scored a total of two goals and conceded 11. While the results highlight defensive challenges, the coaching staff and players noted the series as a “significant learning opportunity” against high-caliber opponents. Following the heavy loss, which stands as one of India’s largest home defeats, head coach Khalid Jamil accepted full responsibility, citing a need for “improved player concentration.” The series began with a 1-1 draw against Panama on September 26 and included a 4-0 loss to Brazil on October 3. To bolster attendance for the final match, organizers had reduced ticket prices for select stands by approximately 90 percent, and the West Bengal government offered free tickets to 22,000 fans who missed Lionel Messi during a previous visit to the city.
