Brazil-Japan Blue Economy and aquaculture cooperation
Overview
A delegation from Brazil’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MPA) conducted an official mission to Japan from August 17 to 22, 2026, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the Blue Economy, aquaculture, and marine conservation.
During the mission, officials participated in the Japan International Seafood & Technology fair to explore technological trends and export opportunities for Brazilian products, including tilapia, tuna, lobster, shrimp, and Amazonian fish species. The delegation also met with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and visited the Toyosu Metropolitan Fish Market.
Discussions with Japan’s Ministry of the Environment focused on sustainable ocean resource management and algiculture. A key outcome of the mission was the introduction of the ‘Blue Seaweed Carbon Brasil-Japão’ project, a collaboration between the MPA and Rede Algicultura BR. This initiative aims to develop macro and microalgae production for human consumption, agricultural biostimulants, and cattle feed to reduce methane emissions. The project includes establishing pilot seaweed farms in Brazil’s Northeast region and creating methodologies to quantify blue carbon sequestration.
