Debates in Brazil regarding the constitutional protection of journalistic source confidentiality have intensified following legal actions involving state information leaks.

The situation escalated following a search warrant issued by Supreme Federal Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes against an informant linked to journalist Luís Pablo. The investigation concerns the use of official state information regarding vehicles used by Minister Flávio Dino.

While proponents of press freedom argue that such judicial measures threaten the media’s role as a democratic watchdog, authorities maintain the inquiry is part of a broader criminal investigation. This investigation, which dates back to 2022, involves allegations of bribery, obstruction of justice, and the unauthorized use of restricted state systems in Maranhão. Federal Police indicate the focus remains on the potential illegal access to state systems rather than the act of communicating with the press.
