Brazil Lula campaign loan scandal
Entities: Federal Police of Brazil · Roberta Luchsinger · Fábio Luís Lula da Silva · Marco Aurélio Santana Ribeiro · Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
Overview
Media reports disclosed that Marco Aurélio Santana Ribeiro, former chief of staff to President Luiz Inácio Lula, received a personal loan of roughly R$ 250,000 from lobbyist Roberta Luchsinger, a close associate of Lula’s son. President Lula ordered Ribeiro to provide a full account of the transaction, stressing transparency ahead of the re‑election campaign.
Ribeiro, known as “Marcola,” announced his resignation from the campaign, saying the loan had been repaid and that he was making his bank and tax records available to investigators. Federal Police opened a probe into possible passive corruption and influence‑peddling, and Lula publicly expressed trust in Ribeiro, claiming he had been unaware of the payment until it surfaced.
Early August reporting clarified that the transfer was R$ 249,000 (some outlets cited about R$ 80,000) and confirmed full repayment. Luchsinger is under a separate Federal Police investigation for alleged influence‑peddling and fraud linked to the INSS scandal and is a close friend of Lula’s son, Fábio Luís Lula da Silva (Lulinha). Police have opened multiple inquiries into Lulinha’s alleged influence‑peddling, and prosecutors allege Luchsinger made more than 40 unrecorded visits to federal agencies between January 2023 and April 2024. Ribeiro, who left his chief‑of‑staff post on 21 July to join the campaign, has provided his financial records to the judiciary and retained counsel, though no direct investigation targets him. On 5 August, he formally asked to leave the campaign to limit further political damage.
