Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity in Brazil has shown a trend toward more selective, higher-value transactions. In the energy sector, the number of deals fell by 30.3% during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, with total transaction value decreasing by 21%. This slowdown in the energy sector is attributed to high interest rates and elevated capital costs. Despite the decline in transaction volume within energy, specific segments such as transmission lines and Energy Tech have seen growth, while traditional generation and bioenergy have slowed. On a broader market scale, while the total number of transactions through August was 32% lower than the previous year, the total financial volume of deals increased by 11%. Legal experts suggest this indicates a shift toward higher-value deals, with activity concentrated in technology, banking, real estate, and professional services, appearing largely unaffected by political uncertainty. This trend of selectivity is also evident in the insurance market. Although the sector generated R$ 764.5 billion in 2025, M&A activity slowed in 2026, with the number of transactions dropping to 16 by October 8 compared to 45 in 2025. This decline is linked to high interest rates and electoral uncertainty. However, the median transaction value in insurance rose to R$ 125 million in 2026 from R$ 71 million the previous year, exemplified by PicPay’s R$ 657.6 million acquisition of Kovr.
