Edimar Rocha Martins, a 49-year-old bricklayer from Imperatriz, Maranhão, traveled over 2,100 kilometers to Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, after being deceived by a social media profile. The persona, known as ‘Jéssica Oliveira’ or ‘Jéssica Fazendeira,’ used realistic AI-generated videos of a woman living on a farm to build a romantic connection with Martins. To fund the journey, Martins sold his belongings. Upon arrival, Martins discovered the persona was an artificial intelligence-generated profile with hundreds of thousands of followers. The account administrator stated the AI character was created “solely to drive social media engagement and sales,” specifically for TikTok Shop monetization, denying any personal contact with Martins. While the creation of a virtual character is not inherently illegal, authorities noted that using such technology for fraudulent purposes can constitute electronic fraud. After exhausting his funds, Martins received assistance from the Belo Horizonte Migrant Service, Service and City Hall, which provided food, shelter, and hygiene facilities. The municipal government eventually provided him with a bus ticket to return to his birthplace in Araguatins, Tocantins. The deceptive social media profile has since been removed.
