In late July 2026 a Brazilian federal judge declared the conditions of the Maxakali Indigenous community in Minas Gerais an unconstitutional state of affairs and ordered the Union, the state government, FUNAI and several municipalities to take urgent remedial actions within 60 days. The decree mandated regular potable water, 24‑hour health posts, infant formula, nutritional supplements and supplements, periodic food baskets, as well as baskets and the creation of a joint management committee to address child mortality and chronic malnutrition affecting roughly 2,500 residents.
