Brazil olive oil labeling investigation

Overview

Following a civil public action by the Federal Public Ministry in São Paulo, Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock conducted laboratory testing on various imported olive oil brands. The analysis revealed that several well-known brands, including Andorinha, Gallo, Borges, Gomes da Costa, Filippo Berio, and Carrefour, were marketed as ‘extra virgin’ but actually met the criteria for ‘virgin’ olive oil, a lower grade.

In more severe instances, products from Costa D’Oro and Terras de Camões were classified as ‘lampante’ oil, which is considered unsuitable for direct human consumption without further refining.

The Brazilian Institute of Oliviculture (Ibraoliva) has called for increased oversight of imports, with its president, Flávio Obino Filho, suggesting that some of these products are low-quality oils discarded in Europe that are being sold in Brazil under false labeling. The findings are expected to support requests for stricter controls on both bulk and bottled olive oil imports.
