Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) has implemented several public health initiatives focused on disease prevention and immunization. In early September 2026, SUS launched the ‘Para cada hepatite, tem um cuidado’ campaign to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of hepatitis A, B, C, and D. This initiative follows 2025 epidemiological data showing varying infection profiles, such as high hepatitis A incidence among adults aged 25 to 34 and significant hepatitis C concentrations in men aged 60 or older. Concurrently, the Ministry of Health reported that over 1 million children under five have been vaccinated with the new Pneumo 20 vaccine since June. ~~This~~ Health Minister Alexandre Padilha announced this milestone during a visit to Montes Claros, Minas Gerais. The Pneumo 20 vaccine, which provides protection against 20 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae, is being introduced to reduce severe cases of pneumonia and meningitis. ~~The Pneumo 20~~ This version will gradually replace the previous Pneumo 10 vaccine in the National Immunization Calendar as existing stocks are depleted. The immunization drive aims to address high mortality rates; between 2023 and 2025, Brazil recorded 4,600 cases of pneumococcal meningitis with a 30% fatality rate, including 187 deaths among children under five. Providing the vaccine for free through SUS offers financial relief to families, as the same immunization can cost up to 600 reals in private clinics.
