On 31 July 2026, the Instituto Mobilidade e Desenvolvimento Social (Imds) and Prospera Lab released the Atlas da Mobilidade Social. The study identifies race, gender, and family origin as primary barriers to upward mobility. Among youths from the poorest 25% of families, 51.6% of non-white individuals and 65.1% of women remain in that lowest income bracket as adults. Only 1.28% of children from the poorest quartile reach the richest 10%. Regional disparities are significant: Amazonas shows the lowest mobility, while Curitiba shows the highest.

A subsequent survey in the book *Brasil no espelho* revealed a societal split between conservative views and aspirations for rights, noting that the meritocratic ideal often masks structural privilege. This social tension was highlighted by criticism of Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira for a remark involving racial stereotyping.

Further analysis confirmed education as the most decisive factor for mobility, with higher Basic Education Development Index scores correlating to greater social ascent. In Amazonas, only 1.43% of low-income youth attain higher education. Local disparities are extreme, exemplified by Assis Brasil, where 84.4% of low-income youths remain in their original income bracket, compared to 2.13% in Ponte Serrada.

By mid-August, the 2026 Report from the Brazilian Inequality Observatory indicated that 71% of 48 monitored indicators showed improvement. Successes include reduced poverty, improved food security, lower unemployment (5.6% in 2025), and decreases in child and elderly malnutrition, alongside declines in deforestation and land-use greenhouse gas emissions. However, structural inequalities remain deeply rooted; income concentration has increased, with the top 1% earning 31.5 times more than the bottom 50%. Disparities persist regarding gender, race, and geography, particularly in the North and Northeast regions.
