Brazil Unified Health System modernization

Overview

Brazil is implementing several initiatives to modernize its Unified Health System (SUS) through scientific coordination and digital technology.

In September 2026, the Ministry of Health established the Brazilian Biobank Network (RBBMS). This network aims to coordinate 108 voluntary public and private biobanks to enhance national research capacity and improve public health diagnostics and treatments by managing biological materials and scientific data.

By October 2026, the government expanded its modernization efforts by designating the Instituto Tecnológico de Medicina Inteligente (ITMI) to manage the National Network of Hospitals and High-Precision Medicine Services. This project involves integrating artificial intelligence and real-time monitoring, including the creation of 14 smart Intensive Care Units and a new 800-bed emergency institute at the University of São Paulo. The initiative is supported by R$ 1.9 billion in funding, primarily through a loan from the New Development Bank.
