Brazilian Amazon environmental protection initiatives

Overview

The Brazilian government and financial institutions have launched several initiatives to monitor and restore the Amazon and other biomes. The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) approved R$ 147.6 million to develop an AI-driven monitoring system, SIM-Biomas, to detect deforestation in real-time across various regions. Additionally, R$ 250 million was allocated to Belterra for agroforestry projects involving the planting of millions of seedlings to sequester carbon and create jobs.

Complementing these funding efforts, legislative efforts such as Bill 2764/26 have been proposed to integrate sustainable agriculture with reforestation. This bill seeks to allow coffee cultivation as a recognized method for restoring degraded areas in the Legal Amazon, provided conservationist management practices are followed. The proposal aims to support small property owners by granting them access to credit lines, carbon markets, and environmental service payments.
