During the Brazilian election cycle, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin has framed the political contest as a struggle between “democracy and barbarism.” In a São Paulo rally, Alckmin accused supporters of Jair Bolsonaro of attempting a coup d'état and targeting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other officials following their election loss. As the campaign progressed, Alckmin called for the impartiality of the Brazilian Electoral Justice, urging the judiciary to act as a guardian of political liberty and freedom of expression. These remarks followed a controversy involving the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) regarding the removal and subsequent reactivation of a WhatsApp channel, channel named ‘Exército do Lula’. TSE President Kassio Nunes Marques had initially ordered the channel’s removal following a request from Flávio Bolsonaro, who alleged the dissemination of fake news. However, Electoral Corregedor-General Ricardo Villas Bôas Cuêva overturned that decision and ordered the channel's reactivation after a technical report from the TSE found no false content publications within the channel. Speaking in Aparecida, Alckmin also addressed religious freedom in response to rumors regarding the status of Our Lady of Aparecida as Brazil's patron saint, emphasizing the importance of respecting religious traditions and maintaining peace across all faiths.
