Brazilian enforcement crackdown continues

Overview

In late July 2026 Brazil’s municipal, state and federal agencies sustained a wave of coordinated operations. In Armação dos Búzios, the mayor’s office, Environmental Police and Maritime Guard kept a close watch on vessels over 10 gross tons to stop illegal fishing in protected waters, and municipal patrols were intensified on 29 July to further deter violations.

Near Natal, soldiers of the 4th Military Police Battalion halted an illegal sand‑extraction site on the BR‑101 margin, seizing a retro‑excavator and two trucks and detaining three workers. A similar crackdown occurred in Porto Velho, where an integrated operation cleared an illegally occupied permanent protection area on Rua da Beira, removing structures that violated environmental legislation.

Environmental prosecutions advanced: the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office filed a civil action in Rondônia against two defendants for cassiterite mining that cleared 6.23 ha of native vegetation, and the Federal Public Ministry sued 13 individuals for a three‑year gold‑mining scheme in the Urupadi National Forest that yielded about 71 kg of gold and razed 3.72 ha of forest.

On 29 July the MPF expanded its legal push, seeking R$1.567 billion in damages and restitution for the extracted gold and citing mercury and cyanide contamination of local waterways.

Customs and contraband seizures expanded, with police confiscating 20,000 packs of illegal cigarettes in Mercedes, seizing counterfeit perfumes and phone accessories near Carmo da Cachoeira, and recovering a stolen beverage cargo in Campinas. Drug enforcement added a bust in Criciúma that recovered more than 17 kg of narcotics, complementing earlier seizures of 373 kg of cannabis in Foz do Iguaçu.

Municipal raids continued in Praia Grande and other towns, targeting noisy venues, unlicensed bars and illegal occupations. An isolated arrest for child sexual abuse was recorded in Arapoti, Paraná, standing apart from the broader environmental and commercial focus.
