Brazilian courts have issued various rulings in separate homicide cases across different regions. In Italva, a jury acquitted a man accused of a 2019 stabbing, accepting a defense of third-party self-defense. Meanwhile, in Rio Branco, the Court of Justice of Acre upheld the decision to send a lawyer to a jury trial for a homicide occurring in July 2025. In Maranhão, a jury sentenced Paulo Emanoel Silva Ataíde to over ten years in prison for a fatal stabbing following a dispute involving children. In Santa Catarina, a defendant received a one-year sentence in an open regime after a jury reclassified a charge to involuntary manslaughter, citing self-defense with culpable excess during an intervention to protect a family member. In Erechim, the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul has charged a 29-year-old man with qualified femicide, bodily injury, and threats following the death of Evelin Del Carmen Betanco Vera, a 27-year-old Venezuelan immigrant. The victim was killed by multiple stab wounds on October 7, 2026, after the assailant allegedly entered her residence in violation of an urgent protective order. Prosecutor Fabricio Gustavo Allegretti stated the crime was motivated by “jealousy and a sense of possession” after the victim ended the relationship. The attack occurred in the presence of the couple’s two young children. Prosecutors are also seeking the loss of parental rights and indemnity for the victim’s successors.
