Brazilian judicial efforts to preserve slavery history

Overview

The Brazilian judiciary has undertaken several initiatives to preserve and present the historical memory of enslaved people through archival research and digital projects.

In September 2026, the National Council of Justice (CNJ) launched a series of webinars to highlight award-winning projects. These include the transcription of 18th and 19th-century testaments in Maranhão, the mapping of judicial processes in the Vale do Paraíba Fluminense, and the ‘Valongo: Justiça pela Memória do Cais’ project, which uses multimedia content to preserve the history of the Cais do Valongo archaeological site in Rio de Janeiro.

Following these efforts, the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais (TJMG) unveiled documents from its Permanent Archive in Contagem. The collection, containing approximately 600,000 historical processes such as auction records and manumission letters, illustrates how enslaved individuals utilized the judicial system to defend their liberty and resist being sold.
