The Brazilian judiciary continues to manage high profile criminal trials and investigations. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has maintained the importance of the “coup draft” document found at the residence of former Justice Minister Anderson Torres, ruling it essential evidence in the investigation into the attempt to subvert the 2022 election results. Moraes also ordered the destruction of weapons, ammunition, and magazines seized from Torres and two former PMDF colonels, Fábio Augusto Vieira and Paulo José Ferreira de Sousa. In the Henry Borel case, the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice has summoned the defense of former councilman Jairo Souza Santos Júnior, known as Dr. Jairinho, to present grounds for his appeal. Jairinho was previously sentenced to over 43 years in prison for qualified homicide, torture, and coercion. The case also involves Monique Medeiros, who was convicted of torture by omission, though the Public Ministry is appealing her acquittal regarding intentional homicide. The prosecution argues she failed to act on warning signs regarding the risks to her son. Regarding investigations into corruption and organized crime, Moraes authorized the transfer of state deputy Rodrigo Bacellar to a prison unit in Rio de Janeiro while he remains in preventive detention. Additionally, Moraes ordered the release of federal judge Macário Ramos Júdice Neto from preventive detention, replacing it with precautionary measures including electronic monitoring and the seizure of his passport. Júdice Neto is investigated for allegedly leaking confidential information regarding Operation Unha e Carne, which targeted TH Joias and suspected links to the Comando Vermelho criminal faction. Other judicial activities include the STF upholding the jurisdiction of São Luís for the trial of Welson Lopes de Andrade, the STJ rejecting an appeal by Marvin Henriques Correia regarding the “Pioz Massacre,” and the archiving of an inquiry against YouTuber Monark.
