Brazilian judicial rulings on political conduct
Overview
Legal and judicial actions have targeted various political figures in Brazil regarding electoral conduct, political speech, and financial integrity.
In Espírito Santo, the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-ES) upheld a R$15,000 fine against former Vitória mayor Lorenzo Pazolini. The court ruled that Pazolini engaged in illegal early election propaganda during a municipal-funded concert in January, where he responded to chants for “governador” with victorious gestures.
In São Paulo, the judiciary issued separate rulings against Vice-Governor Felício Ramuth and retired judge Arthur Del Guercio Filho. Ramuth was ordered to pay R$10,000 in moral damages to the Workers' Party (PT) after a judge ruled his description of the party as “narcoafetivo” constituted an abuse of freedom of expression. Additionally, Del Guercio Filho was sentenced to pay R$9 million for administrative improbity and illicit enrichment involving unidentified deposits made between 2008 and 2013. The ruling included the revocation of his retirement and a ten-year suspension of his political rights.
