Brazilian local women's safety initiatives

In late July 2026 several Brazilian municipalities introduced new measures aimed at protecting women.

On 24 July, the São Paulo‑state towns of Mogi Guaçu and Mogi Mirim opened a Casa da Mulher, a shelter offering accommodation, counseling and multidisciplinary support for women and children affected by domestic violence. The same day, the coastal city of Maricá approved a municipal law to create a three‑year program that provides free self‑defence workshops in public spaces, prioritising vulnerable women.

Three days later, on 27 July, the capital of Mato Grosso, Cuiabá, launched the Programme Lutadoras Fortalecendo a Mulher Cuiabana, delivering a range of free martial‑arts and self‑defence classes (including Jiu‑Jitsu, Capoeira, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo and Muay Thai) for women across the city’s four regions. Funding for the program comes from municipal parliamentary amendments.

Together, the snapshots illustrate a rapid rollout of shelter and self‑defence initiatives across different Brazilian cities, reflecting a broader municipal effort to enhance women's safety and empowerment.
