Brazilian port trade and cargo activity

Overview

Between January and September 2026, major Brazilian port hubs reported significant trade and cargo activity. In Northeast Brazil, the Itaqui, Pecém, and Suape port complexes generated approximately $9.6 billion in combined exports and imports. While São Luís (Itaqui) recorded high export values, it maintained a trade deficit due to heavy imports. Conversely, São Gonçalo do Amarante (Pecém) achieved a positive trade balance of roughly $449.1 million.

In other regions, the Port of Santos reached a record 141.45 million tons of cargo, a 2% increase from the previous year, fueled by containerized cargo and the soybean complex, despite declines in corn and sugar shipments due to atypical rainfall in September. The Port of Paranaguá has taken a national lead in vehicle movement, handling 131,400 units during this period, driven by the importation of Chinese electric and hybrid models.

New developments include the Port of Natal commencing its first live cattle exports in its 94-year history, with shipments to Saudi Arabia and Egypt expected to generate approximately R$ 24 million for the local economy. Additionally, Santos Brasil has committed R$ 111 million over three years to modernize infrastructure and technology at the Tecon Imbituba terminal in Santa Catarina.
