Municipalities and state governments in Brazil are implementing measures to modernize school feeding programs with an emphasis on nutrition and the integration of family farming. In Mogi das Cruzes, studies are being conducted to compare the efficiency of using raw ingredients versus minimally processed products, focusing on logistics, costs, and waste. In São Gonçalo, training for school cooks has been initiated to align with new National School Feeding Program (PNAE) resolutions. These updates aim to increase the proportion of fresh foods to 85%, reduce ultra-processed foods to 10%, and expand the use of products sourced from family farming. At the state level, Minas Gerais has allocated over R$ 480 million for 2026 to support school feeding programs. These initiatives prioritize food quality, nutritional monitoring, and sourcing from local producers to support student well-being and school retention. Officials at the Sagrada Família II State School in Belo Horizonte noted that healthy meals serve as a fundamental pillar for student development. Other states are also increasing investments for 2026. Santa Catarina announced plans to invest over R$ 450 million in school meals, a R$ 30 million increase from the previous year, to provide balanced meals that respect regional dietary habits. Meanwhile, in Paraná, the state government is distributing 4,800 tons of food—including organic rice, beans, milk, and vegetables—to more than 2,080 state schools through a R$ 40.8 million investment via the Paranaense Institute for Educational Development (Fundepar).
