In late September and early October 2026, various initiatives were launched in Romania and Moldova to promote breast cancer awareness and prevention. In Romania, the “Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță” Oncology Institute (IOCN) in Cluj-Napoca announced the “ONE RIBBON. MANY STORIES.” event, where approximately 300 participants planned to form a human ribbon to symbolize solidarity. Additionally, the TVR Tower was scheduled for pink illumination as part of the “Pink Illumination” campaign. By early October, landmarks in both Romania and Moldova participated in the pink illumination efforts. In Cluj-Napoca, the IOCN was lit in pink as part of a global initiative active in over 80 countries. Dr. Cătălin Vlad, manager of the IOCN, noted that the institute’s mission includes increasing survival chances through early diagnosis. In Chișinău, Moldova, the Arcul de Triumf was illuminated to mark the start of International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, featuring survivors sharing personal experiences. As ‘Pink October’ progressed, Romania expanded its focus toward education and free medical screenings. In Deva, the Social Assistance Directorate held sessions for disadvantaged communities regarding risk factors and mammography. In Bucharest’s Sector 6, the ‘Sfântul Nectarie’ Health Center expanded capacity to provide free mammographies and ultrasounds for 568 women. This program prioritizes vulnerable groups, including single mothers, persons with disabilities, and victims of domestic violence or human trafficking. These efforts follow statistics indicating that breast cancer accounts for 27% of all cancer cases diagnosed in women in Romania. On October 16, the ‘One Ribbon, Many Stories’ initiative officially launched in Cluj-Napoca’s Unirii Square. Organized by the IOCN, the event saw approximately 300 people gather to form a human ribbon symbol. Speakers at the event emphasized the necessity of collective action, healthy lifestyles, and early diagnosis in the fight against cancer.
