During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, various organizations in Greece launched initiatives to promote early detection and prevention. The DIMAND group illuminated the Piraeus Tower and the Kamba Estate chimney in pink to convey the message ‘Take care of myself’. The group also implemented on-site preventive screening programs for female employees and provided support to Greek health initiatives such as the ‘Race for the Cure’ and the Scientific Mastology Society. In a broader effort, Panathinaikos BC AKTOR partnered with YGEIA Hospital and White Veil to offer free check-ups to fans using ‘Pink Reminder’ symbols and equipment. These actions, including the use of a ‘Pink Reminder Cam’ and LED screen messages at the Telekom Center Athens, aim to combat a disease that remains the most frequent malignancy among women in Greece. Medical data from GLOBOCAN and the European Cancer Information System indicate that approximately 8,700 new diagnoses and 2,400 deaths are reported annually in the country. The lifetime probability of a woman developing the disease is estimated at 12%, or roughly one in eight women. While the average age of diagnosis is 62, about 16% of cases occur in women under 50. Experts emphasize that early diagnosis significantly improves outcomes, noting that the five-year survival rate exceeds 91% regardless of age or stage, and rises to over 99% for cases diagnosed at an early stage. Medical professionals have recently highlighted the necessity of personalized screening, particularly for women with dense breast tissue, which may require supplemental ultrasounds or magnetic mammography to prevent tumors from being obscured during standard mammography. Additionally, emerging technologies like artificial intelligence are expected to enhance risk prediction and personalized preventative care.
