Breast cancer screening and diagnosis trends

Overview

Medical approaches to breast cancer detection are moving toward personalized risk assessment. New FDA regulations require mammogram reports to include breast density to help clinicians and patients determine if supplemental screenings, such as MRIs or ultrasounds, are necessary. Clinical research is also utilizing genetic testing and health history to categorize patients into specific risk groups for more frequent monitoring.

Despite these advancements in personalized care, significant gaps in screening adherence persist. A survey of women in the U.S. found that 37 percent have skipped or delayed recommended mammograms, with many facing barriers such as transportation issues, housing instability, and caregiving demands.

Concurrently, there is a documented rise in early-onset breast cancer diagnoses among women under age 50. This trend is linked to an increase in estrogen-receptor positive tumors, with Black women aged 20 to 29 facing a 53 percent increased risk. Cancers identified in younger populations are often associated with higher recurrence rates and larger tumor sizes.
