The Brindisi municipal council has been navigating a contentious urban planning proposal from the Aliotto company. Initially, the council faced significant pressure due to a court ruling that threatened to appoint a commissioner to decide on the investment if the municipality failed to act. During early debates, the Democratic Party (PD) expressed support for investment in principle but demanded a thorough assessment to protect the local commercial fabric, noting that the proposal was provided only days before the scheduled meeting.

Following these deliberations, the city council ultimately rejected the urban planning variant related to the Aliotto case with 27 votes against and one abstention. The rejection has precipitated a political crisis within the local administration. Observers noted that members of the mayor’s own majority party voted against the proposal, leading the Futuro Nazionale group to claim the mayor has been “left alone by his own party.” The decision follows allegations that Aliotto failed to meet obligations regarding public works and interest-based agreements.
