British Airways has announced a multi-billion-pound investment to overhaul the cabins of its twelve Airbus A380 aircraft. The modernization project involves installing over 35,000 individual parts per plane, including new seating, updated in-flight entertainment, redesigned galleys, and new staircases. The reconfiguration focuses on premium travel, featuring a new First Class ‘First Suite’ with integrated minibars and a redesigned upper deck containing 106 ‘Club Suite’ business class seats. The airline intends for this to be the “world’s largest business class cabin”. To accommodate these upgrades and an expanded premium economy section, total passenger capacity per aircraft will be reduced from 469 to 417 seats. CEO Sean Doyle has characterized the refurbished jets as flagship aircraft akin to “luxury hotels in the sky.” The First Class section will specifically introduce suites with 1.52-metre high walls and doors for enhanced privacy. The lower deck will house 215 World Traveller seats in an updated economy configuration. Beyond the aircraft, the airline plans to complement the fleet upgrades by building new Club World and Concorde Room lounges at Heathrow Terminal 5, with completions expected by 2028. The rollout will be phased, with the first fully renovated aircraft expected to enter commercial service in the coming months. The redesign follows a visual concept introduced in 2024 and utilizes a herringbone pattern throughout the cabins.
