The early‑2026 drought that triggered a Level 5 water emergency in British Columbia continues to strain the province’s water system. Stage 3 irrigation limits remain, with agricultural allocations near 30 % of entitlements and Okanagan Lake at less than half its normal level. Minister Randene Neill has urged voluntary cuts while evaluating supplemental supplies such as the Antwerp wells and lake transfers. Wildfire activity has intensified. The Brunswick Complex fire has burned over 20,000 ha, and the Signal Hill fire near Pemberton is held at about one square kilometre. On July 18 the BC Wildfire Service placed Kimberley on a citywide evacuation alert after the Matthew Creek fire expanded to an estimated 869 ha and two Tower Creek fires ignited in steep terrain. The alert was lifted on July 25, though a rural‑property alert remains around St Mary’s Lake. On July 27 municipal authorities enacted Stage 2 water restrictions. Kelowna’s McCulloch Reservoir was reported at 70 % capacity, prompting cuts to non‑potable supplies and a request for a strategic firefighting reserve. Abbotsford and Mission began Stage 2 restrictions on July 31, limiting lawn watering, sprinkler use and non‑essential washing. Agricultural users’ allocations were already reduced to 80 % of normal levels. The same day, Greater Vernon Water activated Stage 3 restrictions, asking 56,000 customers to halve usage. Orchardists in the Coldstream Valley sought permission to drill three private wells into the aquifer, a move the regional district and water ministry flagged as a risk raising concerns about risks to the Kalamalka Lake system.
