BC fire ban enforcement continues
Overview
In late July 2026, Conservation Officers in British Columbia issued 19 tickets totaling about $21,850 after finding illegal campfires during a weekend patrol, despite a province‑wide fire‑ban covering Categories 1‑3 in the Cariboo, Kamloops and Southeast fire centres. The ban allowed campfires only in designated areas such as the Northwest and Prince George fire centres, while the province was battling roughly 136 active wildfires.
Early August saw a surge in enforcement and investigations. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police issued two Wildfire Act tickets ($1,150 each) after illegal fires were reported at private residences in the 100 Mile House area. Simultaneously, five suspicious brush fires near Shuswap Lake were extinguished and placed under investigation. Over the long weekend, officers issued an additional 18 violation tickets.
Further incidents unfolded near Shuswap Lake: five spot and brush fires were reported on the evening of August 5, and three more grass fires were discovered on August 7 along Squilax Anglemont Road. Fire crews from Scotch Creek/Lee Creek, Celista and Anglemont quickly extinguished the flames, aided by residents.
On August 7, three spot‑sized grass fires ignited near Copper Cove Road along Squilax Anglemont Road. Residents and passers‑by helped douse the blazes with bottles and buckets of water, and fire departments praised the rapid community response. The RCMP and a Columbia Shuswap Regional District fire investigator continue to probe the incidents, urging vigilance, 911 reporting, and offering a contact line for information. Tactical patrols are planned to maintain public safety amid heightened fire risk and recent memory of the Bush Creek East wildfire. No arrests have been made, and fire prohibitions remain in effect across the Cariboo, Kamloops and southeast regions as fire danger stays high to extreme.
