The Pear Lake wildfire and the broader Big Bar complex continue to cause significant destruction in British Columbia. By August 24, the Pear Lake fire was estimated to cover 164,745 hectares. While the fire experienced rain over the preceding weekend, BC Wildfire Service officials warned that a warming and drying trend expected to begin on August 24 could increase fire activity. Operational efforts remain focused on containment. Crews and heavy equipment have completed machine guards on the southern flank near Pavilion Mountain. To remove fuel between the main fire and established control lines, officials have developed ignition plans for the area north of Highway 99, supported by helicopters and ground crews. In other sectors, crews are conducting direct suppression off Highway 97, while some personnel in Clinton have begun to demobilize after addressing visible hot spots. Evacuation measures persist, with the Big Bar complex remaining under six evacuation orders and six evacuation alerts. Community recovery efforts in Clinton have gained momentum. On August 22, a convoy of food, clothing, and monetary donations arrived to support residents who began returning to the area following evacuations triggered in late July. Assisted by Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Lorne Doerkson and TNRD Director Jim Smith, several truckloads of goods—including contributions from the ‘Chilliwack for Cariboo’ group—were delivered to the Clinton Food Bank Society and Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle. These donations were temporarily staged in 100 Mile House before being transported to Clinton to assist those who lost homes or property. As of August 28, the Pear Lake wildfire is estimated to cover 165,847 hectares, showing minimal growth of 1,107 hectares since August 23. While the fire remains classified as out of control, cooler and more humid conditions have moved into the region, potentially dampening fire behavior. Crews are utilizing aerial infrared scanning to manage heat pockets and are working in the Big Bar Mountain area to extinguish hotspots and construct contingency lines. In the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Area E, evacuation measures have shifted; while 61 properties were previously under orders, the TNRD downgraded orders for 69 addressed properties to alerts. As of August 28, five properties remain under evacuation ~~orders~~ order and ~~282 properties~~ 351 are on ~~evacuation~~ alert. Community recovery in Clinton has gained momentum. Following the evacuations that lasted from July 24 to August 15, the community held a ‘Clinton Strong’ event on September 12 at Reg Conn Centennial Park.
