Bronx apartment building fire

Overview

A two-alarm fire occurred in a six-story apartment building on Montgomery Avenue in the Morris Heights neighborhood of the Bronx. The blaze originated on the fourth floor and spread to adjacent units and the space between the ceiling and the roof.

The incident resulted in one death and left 12 people injured, including five members of the FDNY. One 31-year-old man remains in critical condition after jumping from a fourth-floor window to escape the flames.

The fire broke out around 7:45 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, requiring a response from more than 140 firefighters and medical personnel. Firefighters contained the blaze shortly before 10:00 a.m. after more than two hours of work. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, but investigators are currently reviewing video footage recorded inside the building to establish the origin and sequence of events.
