Brown adipose tissue weight loss research

Overview

Researchers from the University of Basel and University Hospital Basel are investigating the role of brown adipose tissue in weight management. Unlike white fat, which stores energy, brown fat burns energy to produce heat through thermogenesis.

A study published in ‘Cell Metabolism’ compared the effects of cold exposure and the drug fenoterol on energy expenditure. While both increased overall energy consumption, researchers found that only cold exposure significantly activated brown fat, as evidenced by increased glucose uptake in PET/CT scans. Molecular analysis suggested that the Beta-3 receptor, rather than the Beta-2 receptor, is the primary switch for activating human brown fat.

Subsequent reports indicate that brown fat took up approximately 30 times more glucose following cold exposure compared to drug treatment. While the research aims to address metabolic plateaus encountered with weight-loss medications, the team noted that increased energy expenditure alone does not guarantee long-term weight loss and may potentially increase hunger.

Nutritional research examines the roles of dietary fats and brown fat metabolism

New research explores the complexities of dietary fats, highlighting the benefits of certain full-fat dairy products and the effectiveness of cold exposure in activating calorie-burning brown fat.

Brown adipose tissue research explores new pathways for weight loss

University of Basel researchers found that cold exposure activates brown adipose tissue to burn energy, whereas the drug fenoterol increases energy expenditure without activating brown fat.
