Brown bear sightings in Slovakia

Overview

Brown bear sightings near recreational areas and cycling routes in Slovakia have prompted safety warnings from local authorities and the State Nature Conservancy (ŠOP SR). Initial reports included sightings near the village of Košariská and on the Poltár – Rimavská Sobota route.

Authorities have advised the public to exercise caution by making noise to avoid surprising bears, keeping dogs on leashes, and avoiding dense vegetation during dawn and dusk.

Subsequent data from the Pozor medved platform indicates high bear activity across most districts, particularly in the mountainous and sub-mountainous regions of central and northern Slovakia. Liptovský Mikuláš, Banská Bystrica, and Prievidza have recorded the highest number of reports, while sightings remain low in western and southwestern parts of the country. Response teams, including the TANAP team, are managing the high volume of reports.
