The 2026 Brussels Flower Carpet at the Grand-Place commemorates the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Belgium and Japan. Designed by artist Hiro Sugiyama, the installation features a ‘Neo Hokusai’ interpretation of Katsushika Hokusai’s woodblock print, ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’. The floral tapestry spans approximately 70 meters by 24 meters (nearly 14,000 square feet) and is composed of hundreds of thousands of ~~flowers, including begonias~~ flowers. This 24th edition of the event utilizes approximately 750,000 fresh dahlias in shades of magenta, vermilion, and ~~dahlias.~~ yellow. To combat recent European heatwaves, designers ~~utilized~~ specifically selected Belgian dahlias for their higher water content and resistance to heat and drought to ensure the display's longevity. The event includes daytime viewing as well as evening music and light shows.
