Following the death of Mayor Ivica Ilievski in June 2026, extraordinary mayoral elections have been scheduled for October 18 in Brvenica, North Macedonia. Political coalitions have begun announcing their candidates for the race. The VLEN coalition named Jakup Huseini, a civil servant and Master of Laws, as its candidate. The Democratic Union for Integration announced Arkin Jahiji. Other major parties have also submitted nominees: VMRO-DPMNE selected Stojancho Radichevski, a law graduate and municipal committee president, while SDSM nominated Jovica Radeski, a veterinarian and current municipal councilor. As the race develops, tensions have emerged regarding ethnic representation. While the Alliance for Albanians supports Arkin Jahiji, the Albanian League has expressed regret over the lack of a unified candidate between VLEN and BDI. The League described the contest as a “partisan battle rather than a unified effort for the Albanian majority in the municipality.”
