Budva tourism development and Balkan regional trends

Budva continues to experience a period of cultural reflection and economic activity regarding its tourism sector. Recent interest has been driven by the release of 1963 archival footage from Lovćen film, which has sparked social media discussions and nostalgia for the former Yugoslav era. In terms of economic performance, Budva saw a slight increase in tourists during the first half of the year, reporting approximately 245,000 tourists. This aligns with broader trends in Montenegro, where the Plužina region reported a 30% improvement in tourism compared to the previous year. However, the region faces significant infrastructure challenges; reports of severe water and electricity shortages in areas such as Sutomore may impact long-term visitor confidence. Experts maintain that airport infrastructure remains a limiting factor for sustainable growth, prompting discussions regarding the need for a new tourism model to address infrastructure limitations and price competitiveness. Regional trends across the Balkans show significant variation. North Macedonia is seeing accelerated growth, with foreign arrivals up 23.6% and overnight stays increasing by 18.7% in the first five months of the year, aided by a 40% increase in arriving passengers due to improved air connectivity. In Slovenia, the Koper region reported a nearly 6% increase in visitors through July, while the Brežice region saw an 8.6% increase in arrivals compared to last year. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Neum’s tourism season met expectations, supported by infrastructure developments such as new seaside walkways. Conversely, Croatia has reported mixed results. While July marked its best performance in two years with 4.7 million arrivals, June experienced a slowdown with a 6.6% drop in arrivals. Specifically, overnight stays from the German market fell by 28.1% in June, though domestic tourism in Croatia has trended upward with an 11.7% increase in overnight stays.
