The one-year transitional period requiring Bulgarian retailers to display prices in both euros and leva officially ended on 8 August 2026. As of 9 August 2026, price tags must show only the euro amount, which serves as the legally binding and payable price. Merchants may still voluntarily list the lev equivalent for reference, but all conversions must strictly adhere to the fixed official rate of 1 euro to 1.95583 leva. Regarding existing printed materials such as menus, catalogs, and brochures, the Law on the Introduction of the Euro does not mandate immediate destruction or reprinting; businesses may continue using them provided the euro price is clearly identified as the amount due. To prevent unfair price increases or consumer ~~deception during this final transition stage,~~ deception, the National Revenue Agency, the Bulgarian National Bank, and the Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) will continue to monitor commercial practices. ~~Additionally,~~ Notably, the ~~government is developing digital platforms~~ CCP has announced that a ban on economically unjustified price increases will remain in effect from 9 August 2026 until 9 August 2027 under the Consumer Protection Act, with potential fines reaching up to ~~track food prices.~~ 100,000 euros. During the preceding year of dual pricing, the CCP conducted 14,535 inspections, resulting in 1,121 administrative violation reports and penalties totaling 1,310,000 euros. Common violations included improper rounding and incorrect currency conversion. Bogomil Nikolov, executive director of the Active Consumers Association, warned that the transition is entering a new phase, cautioning against practices such as replacing a 5-lev price with 5 euros, particularly in the tourism sector.
