The 2026 Bulgarian presidential contest has intensified as candidates formalize their runs and party endorsements solidify. Incumbent President Iliana Jotova, who officially announced her candidacy, maintains a strong position. A Global Metric poll conducted in early July indicates she leads with approximately 50% support, benefiting from broad appeal across various political bases, including 84% of the BSP-United Left coalition and 78% of Progressive Bulgaria supporters. On September 3, Jotova officially named Kiril Valchev, the Director General of the Bulgarian News Agency (BNA), as her vice-presidential running mate. The Yotova-Valchev ticket faces scrutiny regarding a lack of direct military experience. By mid-September, the pair officially registered for the October 25 elections with over 9,000 signatures. In the final weeks of the campaign, Jotova expanded her platform to include social and constitutional reforms. During a visit to Vidin, she emphasized prioritizing the most vulnerable citizens in the state budget to address poverty and inequality. She also highlighted a diplomatic breakthrough with Romania regarding the strategic importance of the Black Sea for European security. Regarding domestic governance, Jotova pledged to propose constitutional amendments to increase municipal autonomy and reform the appointment of caretaker governments. Specifically, she aims to remove the ‘domova kniga’ restriction to restore the president’s freedom in selecting caretaker Prime Ministers. Following the October 25 elections, Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed his support for Jotova, noting his intention to participate in her pre-election events. Radev also defended the Council of Ministers against allegations of illegal electioneering following a government press release that supported the Jotova-Valchev ticket. Ahead of the second round of elections on November 1, Jotova participated in a debate with opponent Andrei Gyurov. During the debate, she advocated for maintaining Bulgaria's current strategy toward North Macedonia, arguing that the rights of Bulgarians in North Macedonia remain a critical issue.
