The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has conducted various enforcement actions and inspections targeting regulatory non-compliance and health risks. Initial operations focused on local violations, including the suspension of catering establishments in Balchik for using unregistered spring water and the seizure of over 2 tons of unlabeled, untraceable food from an unregulated market near Yundola. Subsequent reports indicate larger-scale seizures and veterinary concerns. In Varna, authorities intercepted 38 tons of peanuts from the US and Egypt due to high aflatoxin levels, as well as 720 kilograms of tea from China containing prohibited pesticide levels. Additionally, the BFSA reported multiple outbreaks of sheep and goat scab in the Stara Zagora, Blagoevgrad, and Haskovo regions, leading to movement restrictions and containment zones. In Haskovo, inspectors also confiscated over one ton of expired dairy products. Recent enforcement in the Burgas region involved the seizure of over 2.2 tons of food products of unknown origin near the village of Krushevet. Following a tip from border police, authorities intercepted 1,740 kg of frozen sheep offal and 100 kg of pastries transported from Turkey and Romania that lacked labels, identification, and documentation. An additional 360 kg of sheep offal was found in a nearby forested area; the entire quantity is slated for destruction. Furthermore, the BFSA blocked two large shipments due to excessive pesticide residues: 19,200 kg of dessert grapes from Turkey, which will be returned to its country of origin, and 9,502 kg of peppers from North Macedonia, which are designated for destruction. Addressing import oversight, Minister of Agriculture and Food Plamen Abrovski has defended the BFSA regarding the entry of sunflower seeds from Argentina. To ensure food quality and safety, Abrovski announced Argentina, announcing new strict procedures, procedures including the sealing and tracking of shipments and silos immediately upon arrival to ensure full traceability.
